Custom injection molds refer to injection molds that are specially designed and manufactured according to the size, shape and material requirements of a specific product or part. These molds are often used to produce plastic parts such as automotive components, electronic device housings, medical device components, etc. Compared with universal molds, custom molds are more accurate, efficient, and ensure product consistency and quality.

Custom injection mold production process

  • Design stage

First, design the mold according to customer needs and product requirements. This includes selecting appropriate materials, determining the structure and dimensions of the mold, and performing the necessary strength and stiffness analyses. Before the design begins, conduct in-depth demand communication with customers to clarify product size, shape, material, performance and other requirements. 2D file, 3D file or sample needed. 

  • Manufacturing stage

After the design is completed, the manufacturing of the mold begins. This includes steps such as material preparation, processing, assembly and commissioning.

  • Mold trial stage

After manufacturing is completed, a mold trial is conducted to verify the performance of the mold and product quality. If necessary, the mold can be further optimized and adjusted based on the mold trial results. A comprehensive inspection of the processed mold parts is worked, including size, shape, surface roughness, etc., to ensure that the design requirements are met. 

  • Delivery and use stage

After mold trial verification, the mold will be delivered to the customer and formal production use will begin. During use, regular maintenance and upkeep are also required to ensure the long-term performance of the mold.

Production cost share of customized injection molds

The production cost of a custom injection mold is made up of multiple components, with the proportion of each component varying depending on the complexity, size, materials and manufacturing process of the mold. The following is an in-depth analysis of the production cost ratio of custom injection molds:

  • Material cost ratio

Material costs are usually a significant component of the cost of producing a custom injection mold, but the exact percentage will vary depending on the size, complexity and type of material used. Generally speaking, material costs may account for 15% to 30% of the entire mold cost. For large, complex molds, this ratio may be higher.

  • Proportion of processing and manufacturing costs

Processing and manufacturing costs are one of the main costs in the production process of custom injection molds. This includes the use of machine tools, the consumption of tools and fixtures, the consumption of electricity and other energy, etc. Depending on the manufacturing process and the complexity of the mold, processing and manufacturing costs may account for 25% to 50% of the entire mold cost.

  • Design cost ratio

The design cost includes the salary of the mold designer, the cost of using the design software, the cost of simulation analysis, etc. Design costs usually account for 10% to 20% of the entire mold cost. For some molds that require highly customized and complex designs, this ratio may be higher.

  • Cost ratio of mold trial and adjustment

Mold trial and adjustment are key steps to ensure mold quality and production efficiency. The cost at this stage includes trial mold materials, trial time, debugging and modification costs, etc. Mold trial and adjustment costs usually account for 5% to 15% of the entire mold cost.

  • Management and maintenance cost proportion

Management and maintenance costs include management costs during the production process, mold maintenance and upkeep costs, etc. The cost of this part is usually relatively low and may account for 5% to 10% of the entire mold cost. However, for long-term mold use, management and maintenance costs may increase over time.
