EPE Foam VS XPE Foam: Properties, Applications and Selection Guide

In the field of material science, EPE (Expanded Polyethylene) foam and XPE (Crosslinked Polyethylene) foam have attracted much attention due to their unique properties and wide range of applications. These two foam materials differ in terms of physical properties, use scenarios, and durability. This article will delve into their characteristics, applications, and provide you with a selection guide.

Material name and foaming method

EPE, the full name is Expandable Polyethylene, and its Chinese name is pearl foam. It is composed of low-density polyethylene grease that is physically foamed to produce countless independent bubbles, which is a physical foam. In Carry Most factory, it is called normal pearl foam.

XPE, chemically cross-linked polyethylene foaming material, is made of low-density polyethylene resin plus cross-linking agent and foaming agent through high-temperature continuous foaming. It belongs to chemical foaming. In Carry Most factory, it is called high density pearl foam.

Characteristics of EPE foam

EPE foam, also known as pearl cotton, is a lightweight, highly elastic material produced through physical foaming. Its most notable features are low density, excellent cushioning performance, and good thermal insulation and sound insulation effects. In addition, EPE foam is non-toxic, tasteless, environmentally friendly and recyclable, in line with the green development trend of modern society.

Cell structure and appearance

EPE foam has larger cells and corrugated surface, which may give people a fluffy feeling.
XPE foam has finer and more uniform cells and a smooth surface.

Feel and performance

EPE foam is relatively soft and has many advantages such as water and moisture proof, shockproof, sound insulation, heat preservation, good plasticity, strong toughness, recycling, environmental protection, and strong impact resistance.
XPE foam is relatively hard, has higher tensile strength and relatively poor buffering capacity, but does not release harmful substances after burning.

Application

EPE foam is widely used in the packaging industry, such as anti-static electronic instruments, daily necessities packaging, farm product insulation, etc. It is an ideal substitute for traditional packaging materials.
XPE foam is more commonly used in automobile sound insulation, building insulation, camping moisture-proofing, air conditioning and refrigeration and other industries.

Cost

EPE foam generally costs less.
XPE foam is relatively more expensive
XPE foam has good elasticity, and the creases will disappear quickly after unfolding, which helps protect the baby from being easily injured. In contrast, EPE foam rolls are prone to creases that are difficult to recover after opening. Secondly, XPE foam has strong heat resistance, higher tensile strength and longer service life. In addition, the texture of XPE foam is tighter and clearer, allowing for beautiful shapes. Finally, the fine independent bubble structure of XPE foam can effectively reduce energy exchange caused by air convection and provide better thermal insulation performance.

Summary

In terms of cost, EPE foam generally costs less. This is mainly because the production process of EPE foam is relatively simple and the price of raw materials is low. The production process of XPE foam is more complex and the cost is therefore higher. So, if you are considering options on a tight budget, EPE foam may be the more economical option.
